Is Your Job At Risk Due To COVID-19? What Options Do You Have?

As the COVID pandemic looks set to continue into the second half of 2020, we find ourselves in a situation like never before. Many countries have closed borders and implemented various lockdown methods to curb the spread of the virus. This has led to the global economy being affected and we see ourselves facing an economic recession.

A fall in the economic output has seen some firms go bankrupt and many firms having to take conservative and cost-cutting measures to balance their books. This has led to many firms laying off employees as well as freezing their hiring process.

What can you do if you have lost your job or are at risk of losing your job?

  • Clean up your CV. When I say clean up, do not just pile up recent work experiences on top of old ones from an old version of your CV. You know you are guilty of it. Instead, tidy up and consolidate old experiences and projects (as in anything that is more than 10 years, you do not need to specify in detail). Focus on adding up projects, accomplishments, and other milestones in the recent 5 years.

  • Talk to the right people. Talk to recruiters, talk to employers, entertain job opportunities, talk friends in the industry, get a real low down about market activities and companies.

  • Let your experience and skills do its job, there are a lot of people who may be in the same situation as you now, hence competition is high, but it doesn’t mean getting a job is impossible. If you don’t get the job you want quick enough, do not falter, the market is tough at the moment, that’s the reality.

“How do I know that I am talking to a good recruiter?”

You can always base your initial impression of a recruiter on their experience, testimonials, and other credentials.

One real measure is if they are honest. Honest about their opinion of your profile, honest about the reality of a role, honest about the probability of an opportunity, and consistent with their interactions with you.

There are savvy ones and ones that are less knowledgeable of a domain, but the more important aspect is which of these recruiters can represent your best interest in the customer in the most ethical and effective way.
