Being Tech Savvy is now mainstream

Thanks to technology, tech geek culture is well on its way to becoming or rather have become mainstream especially now in an interconnected world we live in. One can say it is almost 'difficult' to escape the constant technology advancements/evolution being 'thrown' at us every single day, and its increasing penetration into our lives in the 21st century. Being Tech Savvy, we can share our thoughts, engage others and have an open discussion with everyone/anyone in this world at any point in time. For instance, one can connect with people all over the world with similar interests, even with everyone at different locations - Basically, a virtual community is literally right at one's fingertips.

Gen X vs Millennials

Millennials view technology as a (very) critical part of their life and work. They are constantly “switched on” and connected. They tend to embrace new technologies and adapt rather easily for socializing and working. In contrast, Gen X’ers mainly use technology for convenience purposes and seem to restrict themselves to fewer mobile activities such as online banking and shopping. They would rather read a “physical” newspaper as compared to reading the news online. Technology has yet to become central to their social lives, and this will likely remain the case.

From Dumb to Smartphones

As a millennial myself, I recall owning my very first old school Nokia 3210 as a young teenager and now I am a proud owner of my current Iphone 6 which to me, has the simplest mobile operating system. I would consider myself rather tech savvy as I learnt how to use a smartphone simply by “trial and error”. Looking back, I only had inbound/outbound calls and the Short Messaging Services (SMS) function on my Nokia. Never had I imagined that one day, I would be able to use my mobile device to send emails on-the-go, watch YouTube/Vimeo videos, provide assistance if I lose my way around with the Google Maps app, make instant purchases anywhere conveniently and “chasing” augmented virtual reality fictional characters in a game! Being Tech Savvy has made us adaptable to the evolution of technology and hopefully “smarter” but at the same time, we have to admit that we have become dependent or for some - overdependent on our mobile phones (ie: causing a loss of personal face-to-face communication) due to the smartphone technology opening up many different boundaries for us.

Social Media

Personally, I find that the millennials are creating a “Culture of Opinions” online. They make comments and develop perceptions on potentially any issue or topic they see online, especially within social media. Millennials post more “selfies” than Gen X, post materials that depicts their “mood/emotion” and “follow/like” topics, which are geared towards attracting more followers. I frequently observe that Gen X’ers however, are more inclined to engage in topics involving arts, nature, politics and news and go low on the 'selfie' phenomena. Facebook and YouTube are now more popular than traditional television. It is the new norm and those tech geeks who worked their assess off to accomplish these things have become celebrities themselves. Inspiring Geeks like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Sergey Brin and one of YouTube’s founders, Steve Chen have all made a name for themselves within the internet space.

Geek = New Sexy?

As I imagine the complex technology that has been invented today...

Just with these things, a geek does not become a geek. It does take dedication, enthusiasm and somewhat a good amount of fanaticism about the technical things like software engineering, systems/user interface, information architecture and the list goes on.

Whether or not we embrace this tech geek culture, it is almost impossible to ignore th needs, desires and attitudes of this and the upcoming new generation, as the notion of being a tech savvy (geek) is definitely here to stay.
